A TOUCH OF OSHO AT PLANET JANET

If you are into Osho, you may be interested to know that Planet Janet, a centre for healthy living recently opened in Brighton and Hove, is offering a daily programme of Osho meditations. Also that it has already hosted a weekend group with Prasadham and an event with Veeresh.
How did Planet Janet come about, and wherefore the unlikely name?
It happened as follows: in the Autumn of 2001 Ma Phoebe, known in the scene as Pune astrologer-therapist and some-time writer of the Osho Times horoscope, now living in Hove, met John Kapp. John had lost his wife, Janet, a year earlier through cancer. He was planning to create a health centre in her memory. For this purpose he had bought an old Victorian building in the main street of Hove. His vision was for it to house a vegetarian cafe, a shop selling books and health products, and a clinic with treatment rooms where practitioners could offer complementary treatments. John was critical of orthodox medicine after negative experience with the NHS during Janet's cancer journey, and wanted his centre to champion the cause of alternative medicine.
He took Phoebe along to view the premises: a ground floor and that had been used as the offices of a bank, and a basement that had been the bank's vaults. The rooms were dank, dark and dingy and the heavy, stuck energy hung there like a dead weight. The largest of the basement rooms had fungus growing on the walls and water dripping down from the pavement above. "This would be a good space for dynamic meditation", said Phoebe. "Whatís that?" asked John, "sounds interesting".
So in the following weeks Phoebe introduced John to Osho's meditations. After an intensive weekend at Croydon Hall and a Sartori group with Avekal at Risk, he had got the message and since then is a keen advocate of dynamic meditation which he practises regularly.
Workmen had been hired to start the long Odyssey of reconstruction and refurbishment. The concrete beams and thick internal walls, installed by the bank to deter robbers were drilled out, filling five skips. Meanwhile the weekly meetings held to get together a team to run the centre and therapists to work there, were attracting many interested people who had ideas to contribute . It was decided to structure the business as a co-operative, and setting this up was a fascinating learning process for all involved. We now have an enthusiastic and committed team in place.
John went on to buy the upper floors of the building and it now has, besides the ground-floor cafe and shop area, four sessions rooms, two group rooms, and a flat for the caretaker. The treatment rooms are being booked by practitioners offering a wide range of conventional and complementary therapies including different types of massage, aroma-therapy, reflexology, cranio-sacral therapy, reiki, holistic face lifting, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, ayurvedic medicine and colonic hydrotherapy.
The cafe, open from 8.30am to 5.30pm, offers nutritious food and drink including salads and soups, sandwiches, and cakes, which are as far as possible organic. There is also a juice bar tempting customers with freshly-pressed juices, and a selection of teas and organic coffees. The cafe is also a gallery where artists can exhibit their works and where talks, events and discos can happen outside cafe opening hours. It is well on the way to becoming a meeting place for like-minded people in Hove.
The shop offers an interesting selection of alternative health and new-age books as well as ayurvedic medicines and other health products, cds, oils and crystals.
For Phoebe and John, who have now become a couple, meditation is the better alternative to medication. For this reason a weekly programme of Osho meditation is happening at Planet Janet (see below) They believe the active meditations devised by Osho are most valuable aids healing or to maintaining physical and psychological health ever invented. In addition yoga and pilates groups have started up and humaniversity therapy is represented by a flushing group.
There will also be a programme of workshops, and Pune therapists such as Aneesha, who visited Brighton last September, are showing interest in holding events and workshops at Planet Janet.
