The President, The Prime-minister and VIPs of Nepal at Osho Tapoban

It was a rare sight that the main gates of an Osho commune were guarded with some of the most experienced and highly trained security men of the country along with the media persons from all channels and newspapers. The traffic on the Balaju to Tapoban highway had been blocked for security reasons. As sannyasins at Tapoban were in their third stage of Dynamic meditation in the Buddha hall, the commune flocked with groups of commandos, sniffing dogs, special police force, military chiefs and ADCs who had come to ensure the security inside the commune premises.

For the first time in history, an Osho commune was being visited by The President, The Prime-Minister, The Cabinet of ministers and many other VIPs of the country. The auspicious occasion was to mark the 86th birthday of Former- Prime-Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and the inauguration of Tapoban’s first Hindi magazine.

Krishna Prasad Bhattarai, who is an Osho lover and a residential member at the commune had requested the commune management that his 86th birthday be celebrated at his favorite place.

On 13th December, as the guests started to arrive, the long list of VVIPs included President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Former-Prime minister and Maoist Party Chairman Prachanda, Acting President of Nepal Congress Sushil Koirala, Nepal Congress Parliamentarian leader Ram Chandra Paudel, Former-Prime Ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa, Lokendra Bahadur Chand and Kirtinidhi Bista, Former Commander in Chief of Nepal Army Rookmangad Katuwal and two hundred other VIPs, diplomats and foreign ambassadors.

Regarding the contemporary political scenario of Nepal also, this was a historic event for the stakeholders of Nepalese politics. After the resignation of Maoist Chief Prachanda from the post of Prime Ministership a year ago, this was the first time that all these leaders were seen together at the same public function. Speaking during the function, Maoist Chief Prachanda said, “I look upon Kishun jee as a real democrat and I am thankful to Tapoban for organizing this meeting and giving me an opportunity to come here. Very few people know that during my student years, Osho’s books were the ones that I read the most. Communism and Osho complement each other.”

President Ram Baran Yadav who had been willing to come to Tapoban since a long time and had expressed this desire with Swami Arun called on for peace and said, “Let all the parties move together and let the peace prevail.” The president also lauded the contribution made by Bhattarai for the democracy movement in Nepal. “He dedicated all his life fighting for democracy,” he said.

Likewise, speaking at the function Prime-Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal said that maybe it’s because Kishunjee frequents Tapoban so much that he has such a clean personality. After entering the commune premises he had said, “I had heard that Tapoban was doing a very good work and many foreigners come here and stay for months. Now that I am here I don’t feel like going back at all.” After inquiring about the commune and its programs he requested that he should be invited frequently and that he would love to come and participate. He further added that the peaceful environment at Tapoban could inspire all political leaders to take a peaceful path.

During the program Tapoban also launched its first hindi magazine titled, Osho Tapoban which was released by Krishna Prasad Bhattarai along with Yes! Osho and Osho World that are published from India.

Osho’s Birthday: Importance or Nonsense?

Sannyas News cannot but note that the tradition of celebrating the brithdays, etc of gurus in India goes back a long way. Every day should be a celebration, as the enlightened say, and to magnify just one day, or one hour, can act against continuous celebration consciousness.
However we are happy to publish here a view with a different perspective from Shantam.

Osho: Birthday Blues

Since Osho came back to India and even before in Pune one, December became the peak month for sannyasins to fill the streets of Koregaon Park, Pune.

Winter in Europe, Xmas fever and the birthday celebrations of a Sagittarius Master, it was a tailor made opportunity to be in Pune. Some kind of enigmatic energy used to fill the atmosphere.

Once the Osho birthday celebrations were taken away from the main system, Vibes in the atmosphere of Pune have become lethargic. What is the psychology of this change?

As far my understanding is, the present spiritual scene in the world is influenced by the two great, yet very different beings of our time, J Krishnamurti and Osho. The influence of these two gentlemen is like the influence of Microsoft and apple on the information technology at the present day.

JK did not create any kind of master disciple bonding, neither any solid organisation as it was clear that these two institutions breed Mosquitoes of control and power. So he was sharing his vision in a loose format. Teaching was thought to be complete, and any Foundation under his name could go on reproducing and distributing his books. Any kind of rituals were not encouraged, neither were his ashes preserved. In a lay man´s term, it is like a man who goes on making love till his last, but always with proper contraceptives.

Osho had the opportunity not only to watch other spiritual organisations But also JK´s working too.

So He created His own kind of operating software, loaded with traditional terminology and ways, yet quite fitting with the needs of modern man. His was quite a daring experiment.

What has happened after Osho´s death is quite an anti-climax, at least I feel like it is. It seems the Late J Krishnamurti has replaced the soul of Osho´s work.

As if that is not too difficult to tolerate, two gentlemen who imposed the birthday and other changes are behaving more like a Vatican, but in a non Vatican form.

It seems they are so afraid not to allow any kind of rituals and tradition to take roots because they are afraid another Christianity could take place. In their brain Xmas and the Osho birthday celebration ring the same bells; truth is left aside and dead men are revered.

But they have forgotten one fact. Xmas was created by the priests and not by Jesus Himself. Is there somewhere any reference when Jesus was celebrating his birthday with his people? Whereas a Week long festivity around His birthday was Osho’s Idea and by deleting this, the priest’s mind is entering in reverse mode.

If it becomes possible to bring forward Jesus and Buddha’s time and teachings through photos and videos, I am sure people will follow that rather than the imposed versions. In Osho’s case, all is well documented in its original form, so my idea is that once the powerful lobby leaves the stage, the scene should revert back to its original format. The future should recreate the vibes of Osho’s time, rather than the present imposed changes. Changes are good when they add more features. Cutting the wings of free birds are not natural changes, but the sheer brutality and aggression of stronger species.

Let Celebration be in the air. It is the 11th December….

What did Osho die from?

Sannyas News Editor Parmartha examines the views and evidence

Maybe it doesn’t matter. However Osho himself certainly seems to have thought it was worth examination, and thought (under Amrito’s influence) that he was dying of thallium poisoning between 1985 and 1989, which was somehow administered to him in the USA (in 1985) when he was separated from his close disciples, and taken from one prison to another for 10 days after being arrested in North Carolina, and before arriving back in Oregon.

However there are many other hypotheses, including that he just “gave up” after some thirty years of being the servant of God.

We also all must own up to the fact that Osho took nitrous oxide over many years, and the spin of those in charge of public relations in all the various bodies that now take Osho’s work forward don’t like to discuss this or even acknowledge this. This seems to apply equally to Osho International, to Osho World and to Arun’s outfit in Nepal.

In fact I have seen many deny this hallucinogenic aspect of Osho’s life altogether. However these are easily refuted by reference to the three articles that were written under the collective title “Tooth Truth: Memoirs of a Dental Triumvirate” and printed in the March/April 2001 Edition of Viha Connection. They were written by Nityamo, Ashru and Devageet. Nityamo and Ashru were at various times dental assistant’s to Devageet, who was Osho’s personal dentist from around 1978 to his death. Particularly in Nityamo’s account, but also in Ashru’s, it is clear that Osho had three periods of nitrous oxide usage, Poona One, on the Ranch and in Poona two. Some commentators have denied Osho’s use of nitrous oxide in the Poona two period. Even a brief examination of Nityamo’s article, when she speaks of sessions and dates them in 1987 and 1988 contradict this. For some reason public relations people for Osho don’t wish to acknowledge Osho’s use of laughing gas after 1985 and, only in a passing way, before that time. I suspect the pre 1985 scenario is because they want to distance Osho’s use of the gas away from proximity to his death. Further I can only assume this is done because they feel it subtracts from their view that the main cause of Osho’s death was poisoning by the US government, not Osho’s own use of nitrous oxide.

Secondly some have questioned the amount of nitrous oxide that Osho was absorbing. I can only suggest people read these three articles. It is clear that Osho was sometimes calling sessions two or three times a day even in Pune one. Just as Osho rightly claimed that he had spoken more words than any other teacher living or dead in his life, it is fair enough comment that he might well have inhaled more than any other known nitrous oxide user over the three periods. If so, it must have had a very deleterious effect on his overall health in a body already weakened by diabetes. However it is also clear from a careful examination of the text of the three Osho books dictated under nitrous oxide (Notes of a Madman, Books I have loved, and Glimpses of a Golden Childhood) that this was very much Osho’s own choice, and that he was encouraging his Noah’s Ark as he called his helping team, to forget his bodily welfare.

The other rather facile argument put forward is that all these sessions were for dentistry purposes only. However it is clear if one reads the “Nitrous books” that this is not the case. There is clear evidence there that Osho is encouraging his team of helpers to increase for example the dose, and then record his experience of the drug.

I continue to have an open mind on Osho’s use of nitrous oxide and his death. The symptoms of nitrous oxide poisoning are very similar to thallium, and of course there may have been more than one cause of Osho’s death, but laughing gas simply cannot be ruled out as having no effect on his health at all.

I also continue to have an open mind about whether Osho simply considered his use of nitrous oxide part of his private life which was no-one else’s business (which some argue) , though I doubt it because he must have authorised, and even pushed for the publication of the three ‘nitrous’ books. Sheela and Vivek in a strange alliance (they agreed on little else) certainly did not want them published.

Some commentators consider that those such as myself who remind others of this hallucinogenic aspect of Osho’s life “negative” and “not really disciples”!

Odd, for me it makes Osho more interesting, rather than less. But apart from that, anyone who is really on the mystic path cannot refrain from examining the truth, however unpalatable. What think ye?
