Why Boddhidarma went to China

It has been a few days since we had a really passionate discussion so I asked the Editors for this extract from Osho to be presented: Shahriar

“Ego takes itself very seriously. Now, there is a problem: egoistic people become very much interested in religion. And in fact, they are almost incapable of being religious. Only people who are non-serious can become religious, but they are not too interested in religion. So a paradox, a problem exists in the world. Serious people, ill people, sad people — uptight, hung-up in their heads — they become very much interested in religion because religion gives them their greatest ego-trip. They are doing something otherworldly, and the whole world is just worldly — materialists, condemned. Everybody is going to hell; only these religious people are going to heaven. They feel very, very strengthened in their egos. But these are the people who cannot become religious. These are the people who have destroyed all the religions of the world.

Whenever a Buddha arises, these people start gathering. While he is alive he does not allow them to become powerful. But when he is gone, by and by, the serious people start manipulating the non-serious people. That’s how all the religions become organized, and all religions become dead. While Buddha is there, he goes on spreading his smile, and he goes on helping people. So many times I have told the story: that Buddha comes one day with a flower in his hand, and sits silently. Minutes pass; then the hour is passing and everybody is worried, uncomfortable, uneasy: “Why is he not speaking?” He has never done that before. And he goes on looking at the flower as if he has completely forgotten the thousands of people who have gathered to listen to him. And then one disciple, Mahakashyap, starts laughing, a belly laugh. Amidst that hushed silence his laughter spreads. Buddha looks at him. He calls him close, gives him the flower and says, “Whatsoever I could say through words I have told to you, and whatsoever I cannot say through the words, I transfer it to Mahakashyap” — to a laughing Mahakashyap. To laughter Buddha gives his heritage? But Mahakashyap disappears. Those serious people who could not understand became the manipulators. When Buddha is gone, nobody hears anything about Mahakashyap. But what happened to Mahakashyap, to whom Buddha had given the most secret message: that which cannot be delivered through words, that which can only be delivered and received in silence and laughter, that which can only be given by tremendous silence to tremendous laughter? What happened to Mahakashyap? In Buddhist scriptures, nothing is mentioned — only this solitary anecdote, that’s all. When Buddha is gone, Mahakashyap is forgotten; then serious long-faces start organizing. Who will listen to the laughter? And Mahakashyap will recede back. Why bother? — these serious people are fighting so much that a man who loves laughing will get out of this mad mob of competitors: “Who is going to be the head of the Buddha sangha, of the Order of Buddha?” — and politics enters, and fighting, and voting, and everything. Mahakashyap is simply lost. Where did he die? — nobody knows. Nobody knows the real heir of Buddha.

Many centuries, almost six centuries pass; then another man, Bodhidharma, reaches China. Again Mahakashyap’s name is heard, because Bodhidharma says, “I’m not a follower of the organized Buddhist religion. I have received my message through a direct line of Masters. It started with Buddha giving a flower to Mahakashyapa, and I am the sixth.” Who were the other four in between? — but it became a secret thing. When mad people become too ambitious and politics becomes strong, laughter goes secret. It becomes a private, intimate relationship. Silently, Mahakashyap must have delivered his message to somebody, and then he to somebody else, and he to Bodhidharma.

Why did Bodhidharma go to China? Zen Buddhists have been asking for centuries, “Why? Why did this Bodhidharma go to China?” I know; there is a reason: the Chinese are more joyous people than Indians, more delighted with life and small things, more colorful. It must be the reason why Bodhidharma traveled so long, crossed the whole of the Himalayas to seek and search for people who could laugh with him, and who were not serious, not great scholars and philosophers, and this and that. No, China has not created great philosophers like India has. It has created a few great mystics like Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, but they all are laughing Buddhas. It must be that Bodhidharma’s search towards China was a search for people who were non-serious, light.

My whole effort here is to make you light, non-serious, laughing. People come to me, particularly Indians, to complain that: “What type of sannyasins are you creating? They don’t look like sannyasins. A sannyasin, has to be a serious person, almost dead, a corpse. These people laugh and dance and hug each other. This is unbelievable! Sannyasins doing this?” And I tell them, “Who else? Who else can do that? — only sannyasins can laugh.”

An Inner Transformation of the Osho Movement

An Appeal from Swami Narendra Bodhisatva for the Resurrection of the worldwide Osho-Movement

The History
At the foothills of the eternal Himalayas from Sept.26 to Oct.5, 1970 Osho held a Meditation Camp in Kulu-Manali (Himachal Pradesh). On September 26, He initiated His first group of disciples, which he calls “neo-sannyas.” His version of this ancient Hindu institution is radically different from the tradition, where the seeker renounces all possessions, is celibate, and lives on what he or she is given by those who remain engaged in society. As Osho begins to define “neo-sannyas”, His challenge to the historical tradition becomes increasingly clear.

1970: A New Definition of Sannyas
Osho’s sannyasins were asked to wear shades of red and orange. They also receive a necklace from Osho, known as a mala, which consists of one hundred and eight beads plus a locket with Osho’s picture. In addition, Osho gives each sannyasin a new name. The new name includes a prefix, common to all—“swami” for men and “ma” for women.
“When I give you a name, I give a name for certain reasons, for certain qualities that I see in you, for certain possibilities that I see in you, for certain characteristics that are already there – and all these become associated.”
Osho has given us a new identity, individuality and freedom through wearing red or orange dresses/robes. But we have lost it in due course by the wrong propaganda of our own priests and politicians. We could regain our lost identity, individuality and freedom by wearing maroon dresses and robes. We could make a conscious decision to devote at least one hour each day for an Osho meditation (whichever technique you like most) or you could sit silently for one hour, if you feel so. You must be remembering how friendly and homely we felt whenever and wherever we met in those years.

September26th, 1985
To save the city of Rajneeshpuram (Oregon, USA) in certain unavoidable circumstances Our Beloved Master Osho said:

“And that is, from today, you are free to use any colour of clothes. If you feel like using red clothes that is up to you.”
“The second thing: you return your malas – unless you wish otherwise.

October 8th, 1985
Osho said in discourse:
“… You have been clapping because I have dropped red clothes, malas. And when you clap, you don’t know how it hurts me. That means you have been a hypocrite!
Why have you been wearing red clothes if dropping them brings you so much joy? Why have you wearing the mala? The moment I say, you rejoice. And people rushed to the boutique to change their clothes, they have dropped their malas.
“But you don’t know how much you have wounded me by your clapping and by your changing.
“Now, I have to say one thing more, and I would like to see whether you have guts to clap or not: that is, now there is no Buddhafield. So if you want enlightenment, you have to work for it individually, the Buddhafield exists no more. You cannot depend on the energy of the Buddhafield to become enlightened.
“Now clap as loudly as you can, CLAP! …
“Now you are completely free: even for enlightenment only you are responsible. And I am completely free from you.
“You have been behaving like idiots!…
“And this has given a good chance to see how many people are really with me…

Before leaving His body Osho suggests that maroon robes help us in meditations. It is the search of ten thousand years of Tibetans that the Maroon color is immensely helpful in meditation.
It is a rare phenomenon in the whole history of consciousness that Master of Masters Osho gave us a simplest device/way to contact Him exactly at 7.00 p.m. by wearing white robe wherever we are through “Osho White Robe Brotherhood.” Even if the Osho-sannyasin is alone then too it is possible to contact Osho exactly at 7 p.m. through Osho White Robe Brotherhood.”

On 10th April 1989, Osho gives His last discourse: “This moment you are the most blessed people on the earth. Remembering yourself as a Buddha is the most precious experience, because it is your eternity, it is your immortality.
It is not you; it is your very existence. You are one with the stars and the trees and the sky and the ocean. You are no longer separate.

The last word of Buddha was Sammasati. “Remember that you are a Buddha – Sammasati.”

Our Beloved Master Osho Left His body on 19th Jan.1990 but He did not leave any instructions regarding Maroon robe/dresses or White Robe. But some powerful section of so-called Osho-sannyasins have completely changed His Sannyas Movement by saying that wearing mala and maroon dresses are not necessary now at any time.

Ninety-nine percent of so-called neo-sannyasins have dropped completely malas and sannyas names. In the West so-called sannyasins and group-leaders have dropped malas and sannyas-names! Group leaders still conducting the same groups and therapies without taking the name of our Beloved Master Osho!

Osho in His last discourses on Zen (Aug.-Sept. 1988) says repeatedly:
1. Can we celebrate ten thousand buddhas?
2. Can we celebrate the gathering of ten thousand buddhas?
3. Can we celebrate the meeting of the buddhas?
4. Can we celebrate the assembly of the buddhas?
5. Can we celebrate the gathering of the buddhas?
6. Can we celebrate the ten thousand Buddhas’ resurrection?

Similar statements are given by Osho in different series on Zen in 1988. Please think over this again and again as osho-sannyasins that can we celebrate the resurrection of ten thousand buddhas? Moreover could we wear mala over maroon dresses (pants & shirts, jeans & shirts, salwar & kameez, sari or whatsoever you like to wear in maroon shades as we were using earlier red or orange to become friendly and homely anywhere and everywhere. We understand that it is courageous and challenging as it was in early days of neo-sannyas movement, but we are sure it will help us in our inner growth and meditation. We feel it is not impossible to wear mala and maroon dresses but we are certain that it will be immensely helpful to create buddhafield/ energyfields all over the world.

Our Beloved Master Osho has said in 1984 “Man is now living in his most critical moment and it is a crisis of immense dimensions, either he will die or a new man will be born. We could accept the challenge and could make worldwide effort to transform human consciousness so that present man can die and a new man could be born out of his ashes. It is going to be a death and a resurrection. Unless human consciousness changes totally man cannot survive. As he is right now he is already outdated.

The crisis has already begun in the form of chemical and biological war, terrorism throughout the world with deadly weapons and now terrorists are in a position to acquire atomic bombs and other atomic arsenals. There will be every kind of destruction on earth including natural catastrophes and man manufactured auto- suicidal efforts. In other words there will be floods which have never been known since the time of Noah, along with earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, droughts, food shortages, epidemics and everything that is possible through nature. The earth cannot tolerate this kind of mankind any longer. There will be wars which are bound to end in nuclear explosions, hence no ordinary Noah’s arks are going to save humanity.
Osho’s sannyasins could create a Noah’s ark of consciousness remaining centered exactly in the middle of the cyclone.
“I say to you that except this there is no other way. Tokyo, New York, San Francisco, Los Angles, Mumbai etc. – all these cities are going to disappear. And the holocaust is not going to be confined to certain places. It is going to be global so no escape will be possible. Moreover Osho has said one enlightened Osho sannyasin cannot avoid the global natural catastrophes and man manufactured auto suicidal efforts (biological, chemical, atomic war), at least 200 enlightened Osho sannyasins are needed. Our Beloved master Osho left behind him ten thousand buddhas although at the moment they are not alert, aware, awake. And also there is an equal possibility of a chain reaction of buddhahood, if at least 200 Osho sannyasins are enlightened.
I would like my people at least, not to waste time in postponing their own growth–OSHO

We request all Osho-sannyasins and Osho-lovers to devote at least one hour in meditation (whichever technique they like) or to sit for Osho White Robe Brotherhood or to sit silently doing nothing. We could connect ourselves daily with Osho either by reading his books or listening His audio or video discourses and the last and the best is to meditate.

“My sannyasins have to become burning torches moving around in the world, to share their fire with anyone who is ready.” – Osho

Beloved sannyasins, it is our humble request, but you are absolutely free to agree/ disagree/ criticize/ protest or whatsoever you feel…

Film offers new perspective on Osho

Inside Out, a Personal Journey.
Sannyasnews reporters.

Israeli Television Channel 2 has screened “Inside Out”, director Anat Alachmi’s personal journey in the footsteps of Osho, combined with a take on Osho’s admirer-turned-detractor Uri Lotan, now deceased.

The film was mostly shot at Osho’s ashram in Pune, India and is interspersed with transformational tales related by some of the many Israelis who still make pilgrimages to the compound, almost 20 years after Osho’s death.

According to director Alachmi, whose first visit to Pune was in 1992, “Lotan, who stayed in Osho’s commune during its stormy days of the ’70’s… eventually became an ‘enemy’ [of Osho's] and tried to metaphorically ‘kill’ the guru”. A well-known psychologically pattern of love and hate.

Alachmi says that what began as a journalistic documentation was “utterly transformed” when Lotan died, and she set out on her own journey to India, armed with his personal diaries from the days he spent at the Ashram.

Sannyasnews is keen to get a copy of this film, but as yet it seems difficult. Any readers who might know how to get hold of Israeli television films, could they make an entry in the blog below.

Osho Park in Pune Causing Local Unrest

Osho Teerth Polluiton Problems upset local residents
SannyasNews reporters

The Osho Teerth Park was created by the commune from a swamp back in the early nineties. It was transformed into a Japanese zen garden with stone bridges, bamboo trees, stone benches, cement busts of Boddhisatva, bird houses, etc. The polluted water flowing through the area was purified naturally using holding ponds with selected plants.

Sadly at present the water flowing through the nullah (stream) has again become polluted according to “Intelligent Pune”, the local on line newpsaper this week.

(It also needs to be said that The Osho Teerth Park has inspired the Pune Municipal Corporation to simulate such gardens through the city of Pune since it’s creation in the 1990’s).

However local people in the Sant Gadge Maharaj Bastir area are complaining that in the latest monsoon knee level water entered their houses due to blockages at the intersection with the Osho Teerth, and part of the area became a mosquito invested wasteland.

Residents in the area complain that despite protests no efforts have been made to clean up the nullah.

The Ward officer for the area, Shree Ram Salvekar, says the nullah outside the commune was cleaned by his department a month ago, Unfortunately a screen installed by the Osho people is still blocking the nullah with waste and it overflows backwards from that point.

The officer insists that the nullah inside the Osho Commune is the responsibility of commune staff but this has not been efficient of late. Attempts to reach the commune for comment have failed according to “Intelligent Pune”.

This seems to us at sannyasnews a paradox. Do the commune not have the resources to clean this matter up? Where has the tradition of genuine volunteering gone, which has been replaced by local labour? It seems it is time to restart this tradition of volunteering which was based on the love of Osho, and his commune, in which work itself was transformed into an act of love.

Experiences from the Green Commune in China

Rodak ( from Holland)

Today I realized I ask more to other people what solution they have for a problem and accept it. Usually I like to tell how I think something should be done. I think it is part of commune life to share the problem and the find the solution. Here in the commune people share their lives and happiness together. Problems are solved together by using the energy of the people together. The special part is that it is a meditation commune where people live in harmony by not using their mind but by connecting their life energy together. This way you do not need to become angry, because you do not stick to some mind idea but accept other peoples ideas and together choose the best one. For families this is a good environment because raising children takes a lot of work. If you can share the work with other people and for more children it leaves also more time for parents to do their own things during the day, for example meditation for which you otherwise would have no time. With only two parents taking care the children and parents can easily develop habits in their behavior that are not good for either. Here you can see changes in your habits and find out what you changed, so you do not need to do it again.

In green commune the people are flowing. Because so many people are here, as a visitor you can join the flow and do new things that you normally would not do or even could not do. I have experienced from the first day here that this energy was helping me to do my meditations, to help fix body problems (foot, spine) and during the day in my activities. Before coming I had a problem to walk in the airport to the airplane, here I have made long walks in the mountains. By experiencing every day what is happening in my body, I am more aware of what I need to do to overcome a problem and stay healthy.

My body has become more flexible, walking is more natural. I can let my body correct itself for a bad posture, if I let it do it. I write my diary every day, I have found again that I wake up cleaner the next morning, and that I am more flowing. In the morning in laughing I can feel my body opening and become flexible. After laughing when I walk back I do not use glasses and can see the plants very well and shining next to the street. I than enjoy the nature around very much.

The daily activities and walks in the mountains help me to feel if I am using my body correctly especially when I get tired. Usually something goes wrong or my thinking is not correct if I am not in the flow and tired. So when I notice something goes wrong I know what to do to get back in the flow.

I thank green commune for taking good care of us and trying many things to make our stay better and sharing their lives and energy with us.

Fleur (from Holland)
Change foot

In group do mandala, keep running while watching partner across me into eyes, then suddenly heavy pain in foot. Before never had this pain, can not go on. Sandesh push some, I feel heavy pain and need to cry. Some later I relax more when feel energy Sandesh and Mira, can handle the pain and some later can walk. Sandesh tell me it is some old pain, from an accident when I was a child, then I ignored the pain and now it come out. Can do group for next day while using some medicine on foot and ancle. The day after group I can climb mountain and walk more than 3 hours, I enjoy and feel peace. The past three months I could not walk more then one half hour without pain.
Some days later, pain come back, and while working foot get fat. Very difficult to walk, no way can bend foot or move hip easily. Do more walks with group, feel heavy pain and afraid that I break my body. Same time my mind is making me crazy and I go thinking too much about insecurities and other so called worries. I tell myself it is because of the pain. But now I see it is the other way around, I forgot to take care of myself after group with using medicine fot foot. I just did not use because I keep telling myself to be a strong young woman. It is a mind habit that I still have and which is forcing me doing things I can not do. Actually taking care of myself and my body makes me a more happy and loving person and that I experience is most important in life. Sandesh and the commune gave me some advice to get more energy flowing. I followed and yes my energy is more flowing, mind is more quiet and foot is less fat and less red. Some pain still there but I try, every time I need to walk, to find a way to walk without too much pain, it is walking with awareness what is happening inside, how my body is changing and my mind keeps quiet. Then and only whyen life energy is flowing, I can walk and sometimes feel like dancing with not too much pain.

Laughing
Now I am in commune for 3rd time. And yes, can do laughing again in mornings all together. Alone at home it is very hard to do, maybe can keep going on 10 minutes. In group I feel energy flowing, when I hear other persons,we share energy and it is like I take over others laugh. So waking up now even at 5 in the morning is no problem at all. I feel stiffness in body sometimes and difficult to come out of bed. But after laughing I always feel more flexible, some blocks of muscles and joints relax while laughing. And again I have some pain in mouth and jaw, my teeth change so much that I can not bite my upper and lower jaw together like before. So the dentist is maybe not happy but I feel more happy and relaxed. It is a wonderful start of every bright new day with this exercise to make the mind more silent and changes my attitide during daily life.

Kundalini

Running in life for my job and friends, feeling bodypain and much tension many times and finally get sick, that was my life till one and a half year ago. Then a friend introduced me the kundalini meditation. First time I felt very relaxed afterwards. I kept doing daily one hour for some weeks and noticed that I just felt better when I finished. Then I felt this was something which can help me in life. So I just came to experience commune. Every day kundalini meditation in group, around 4 or 5 o’clock. The time in the day people naturally feel their energy level go down. Then we do shaking, dancing, sitting and lie down. In the beginning shaking was very difficult, I could not shake my feet or ancle, many bodyparts were so stiff. So much sweat come out of body because energy is blocked some where. Dancing gives me most of times a very free feeling to move my body from inside, it feels as a massage to all bodyparts. In sit I can reach peace when sit without tension in body, however this requires a lot of awareness. In lie down I feel some blocks open and then energy goes flowing more and more, I relax fully. Afterwards I feel like a new day can begin. New energy, more light and joy again.
Now I do almost one year daily kundalini. It has become a way of life for me. Everywhere I go, I take the music and make time for kundalini, even on holiday in Nepalese Himalaya’s. Kundalini is coming back to myself, feel what is happening and watch my body and mind. It is the time my awareness grows and this is exactly that which make change in life possible. Because of kundalini I now feel my own energyflow and can keep it more flowing. That makes life more pure from my inner being. This life energy which flows inside of me, makes me more free, more creative and more open to to anything what happens to me on any moment.

Same time kundalini makes my body stronger. So I feel more energy and have more power, physical but also being to keep following my flow and just doing my thing, whatever it is, whatever I feel like doing. Kundalini in the commune goes more deep; we share our energy which makes me easier flowing and happy.

Lin Ying(from China)
3 years old and 33 years old
Lin Ying

When I am 3 years old, I was scald seriously in an accident. It’s lucky that I was wearing pants with open crotch, so the buttocks is ok. But the left leg is scald seriously. I thought that the meat was cooked. A piece of skin was cut from the right leg to be grafted on the left leg. I stayed in the hospital for very long. My legs are even hung in my memory (in case the wound is covered after medicine being applied. Also in case that I move ) At last the wound recovered.. My father always said very luckly :’The child survives in disaster.’ Later I never walked well. I often fell to the ground when 3 years old. When I was some elder, I woudn’t fell, but the way of walking is very ugly. The tiptoes point to the outside. The buttocks is turned up. I know it when I am very young. I always want to modify. But no way!
I am terribly bad at sports related to running. I have good height and length of leg. What a pity! I like dancing, Kongfu and gymnastics. But my postures are always very strange. Teachers sais that my coordination was not good, which makes me to be weighed down.
Later, I escape from these sports, although I like them very much…
When I am 33 years old, I met Sandesh. When he saw me at the first time, he felt that my way of walking was very strange. He knew that I was blocked. The bone of leg and Pelvis mismatched. So the place that they should fix together now is hole. (When I went to have injection, the doctors always told me to relax. They said that you are so nervous to have a hole in the bottocks). Now I know that everything comes from that disaster of 3 years old—-Because the legs were hung, the soft bone distorted. I didn’t know before… I had many explanation for my problem — lack of Ca,bad body quality, bad co-ordination.
Shit! They are not the reason.
After 2 groups, my left leg is better and better. The blocked part is recovering gradually. Unimaginable! During 2 groups in 2 months, after feet blistering, heel cracking, the front part of sole aching when touching the ground, I can walk one morning suddenly!

Now, I really understand from my body. The body sincerely records your past life. It’s sickness tells you about the problem of the concept in your mind. It continues telling, but I never understand. O! I never well feel my body. I am just busy, busy with chasing what the mind want—money, love, desire, beauty- then the heart is still empty!

Now, I begin live with myself really. I feel everyday that I exist. I feel the joyance that the body-mind connect. The joyance is so simple! My life is so broad! The power hidden deep in my body is awakened- I don’t feel weak any more!

I bless my self: power, power, more power!
